Impressions of Columbia
Impressions of Columbia

With a population of approximately 127,000, Columbia is the largest city in South Carolina and the trade center of an important agricultural region. In 1786, Columbia replaced the coastal city of Charleston as the capital of South Carolina. The palm tree, state symbol of South Carolina, is ever present in the cityscape of Columbia. The most famous buildings include the Museum of Art, the Museum of Afro-American Culture and the University, which was founded in 1801. The city partnership, which was established in the year 2000, is the result of a relationship formed in 1997 between the German State of Rhineland-Palatinate and South Carolina with the purpose of promoting exchange on the municipal level.
