Palatinate Theatre

Here you can find a film about the Palatinate Theatre

In the immediate neighbourhood of the steel and concrete architecture of City Hall is the imposing sandstone structure of the Palatinate Theatre, flanked by two masks in Carrara marble.

The first represents an African King, the second a fallen angel. Both are art works by the German sculptor Gunther Stilling.

The opening of the Palatinate Theatre took place on the 30th of September 1995. The spectators can enjoy musicals, operas, operettas, ballet and plays on two different stages ('Großes Haus' and 'Werkstattbühne').

Excavations made here in the course of construction revealed parts of the old city fortifications and remains of a late Stone Age settlement - indications that the city was settled 6000 years ago.
